Client Education: What to Pack for Your Indoor or Outdoor Elopement
Eloping is all about creating a wedding day that’s intimate, meaningful, and free of unnecessary stress. But even with a simplified wedding plan, there are still a few essentials you’ll want to have on hand to ensure a smooth and stress-free experience. Whether you’re saying “I do” in a cozy indoor venue or atop a scenic mountain, packing the right items can make all the difference. As a wedding photographer, I’ve seen firsthand what couples wish they had (and what they definitely needed). So, here’s my ultimate elopement packing guide for both indoor and outdoor settings.
Packing for an Indoor Elopement
An indoor elopement might seem easier to plan for since you’re in a controlled environment, but there are still a few must-haves to keep in mind. Here’s what you should bring:
Your Marriage License & Identification
This is the most crucial thing to remember! You can’t make it official without your marriage license, so double-check that you have it along with any necessary identification.
Vow Books
Even if you’ve memorized your vows, having them written down ensures you won’t forget anything in the excitement of the moment. A beautiful vow book also makes for a sentimental keepsake.
Touch-Up Kit
Indoor lighting can highlight every detail, so it’s helpful to bring a small touch-up kit. This could include:
Powder to reduce shine
Lipstick or lip balm
Bobby pins and hair spray
A lint roller for any unexpected fuzz
Comfortable Shoes
If your elopement includes moving between locations or a bit of standing, consider bringing an extra pair of comfortable shoes to swap in when needed.
Special Details for Photos
As your photographer, I love capturing little details that tell the story of your day. Bring meaningful accessories like heirloom jewelry, a handkerchief, or a letter from a loved one. These small touches add depth to your wedding album.
Clothing Steamer
Even if your outfit looked perfect when you packed it, it might wrinkle in transit. A travel-sized steamer can help ensure your dress or suit looks flawless in photos.
Packing for an Outdoor Elopement
Outdoor elopements are breathtakingly beautiful, but they require a bit more planning to ensure you’re prepared for whatever nature throws your way. Here’s what to bring
Weather Changing Attire
Outdoor temperatures can fluctuate, so bring layers! Consider:
A stylish shawl or jacket
Comfortable base layers if it’s cold
Breathable fabrics if it’s warm
Blankets for warmth in between shoots or special moments
First Aid Kit
Blisters, scrapes, or minor cuts can happen, especially in outdoor settings. A first aid kit with band-aids, pain relievers, and antiseptic wipes can be a lifesaver. Don’t forge the bug spray or sunscreen lotion as well!
Snacks & Water
You might be so caught up in the excitement that you forget to eat. Pack light snacks like granola bars or fruit, and bring plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially if you’re eloping at a high-altitude or remote location.
Outfit Protections
Nature can be unpredictable, so it’s smart to bring:
A clear umbrella for unexpected rain
A towel to wipe down damp areas
A garment bag to keep your attire safe before you put it on
Headlamps or Flashlights
If your elopement is happening at sunrise, sunset, or in a remote area, having a light source will make navigating in low-light conditions much easier.
Final Thoughts
Whether your elopement is inside a charming venue or out in the middle of nature, packing the right items will help ensure everything runs smoothly. Think about comfort, preparedness, and capturing the best possible memories. As your photographer, I want you to focus on soaking up every incredible moment—not stressing about what you forgot. With a little planning, your elopement will be just as magical as you imagined.
