How to Elope In Moab
Recognized mainly for Arches National Park, Moab, UT the area consists of unique red rock arch formations unlike anywhere else in the US.
Moab is famous for its adventurous spirit, catering to climbing, canyoneering, base jumping, and rope swinging. Visitors come here for off-roading, hiking, exploring dinosaur track fossils, and enjoying the scenic vistas. During summer, many head to the Colorado River for floating, kayaking, or simply cooling off with a refreshing dip.
I’ve put together a list of everything you need to know about eloping in one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen and am happy to answer any additional questions you might have.
As with any kind of elopement, especially in a National Park, make sure you have all the required permits and licenses needed!
How to legally get married in Moab
In Utah, both partners must apply for their marriage license in person, presenting all necessary documents and IDs. An officiant must conduct the ceremony, with two witnesses aged 18 or older present. Familiarize yourselves with the guidelines to ensure compliance with the state's marriage laws. Unlike some states, Utah does not have a waiting period once you have the license in hand, allowing you to marry immediately.
For those eloping, handling the paperwork beforehand in your home state is an option. Moab, Utah has a local clerk's office for easy license acquisition. While it is the officiant's responsibility to return the paperwork, some couples choose to do so themselves to expedite processing, which can take up to six weeks. Keep in mind that clerk offices operate on standard business hours.
If having the physical license on your wedding day is not essential, Utah County offers online application options. Although convenient, note that this type of license is valid for only 32 days, so time your application accordingly to avoid needing a new one.

When considering the ideal time to elope in Moab, aiming for the endings of the busy season will provide a more private experience. This block on the calendar, which falls outside Mid March through mid October, offers fewer crowds, less traffic, and increased privacy. Optimal months for elopements in Moab are March, October, and November, while avoiding Jeep Week unless you desire it as part of your wedding day.
In addition to selecting the date, choosing between a sunrise or sunset ceremony can significantly impact the privacy of your trailside celebration. Here's a breakdown of each season in Moab:
Spring in Moab:
From March to May, temperatures range from the 60s to 80s, making it an ideal time for elopements with mild weather and minimal rainfall.
Expect desert winds during spring, but rain is generally not a concern.
Summer in Moab:
Summer temperatures can soar to 100 degrees, making it less favorable for elopements due to discomfort and high visitor traffic.
Fall in Moab:
Considered the best time, with decreasing temperatures and fewer crowds, October is a great month to consider for your elopement.
While September sees the most rainfall, October offers a perfect balance.
Winter in Moab:
Daytime temperatures in the 30s and 40s offer a milder winter experience, with the possibility of snowfall adding a picturesque aesthetic to your elopement.
Moab receives an average of 2-9 inches of snow during the winter season, creating a unique backdrop for winter ceremonies.
How to get to Moab
Moab is situated in a remote location, yet conveniently close to various destinations. The recommended approach is to fly into Salt Lake City, rent a car, and make the 3-4 hour drive down. Alternatively, you could opt to fly into the Grand Junction Airport in Colorado and then drive over. While Moab does have a small airport, expect higher ticket prices and plan on renting a car or Jeep. For those interested in a road trip or extending their honeymoon to other locations, flying into Denver or Las Vegas airports is also an option, followed by a 5-6 hour drive.
